Rust will stop shipping host tools for 32-bit Windows targets from version 1.100
The i686 Windows targets move to std-only support; developers on 32-bit Windows hosts will need to cross-compile.
The Rust compiler team has announced that, starting with Rust 1.100.0, the i686-pc-windows-msvc target drops from Tier 1 with host tools to Tier 1 without host tools, and i686-pc-windows-gnu drops from Tier 2 with host tools to Tier 2 without them.
Prebuilt standard libraries will still be distributed, and the MSVC target will still be tested in CI. What goes away is the compiler and other host tools for these targets, which means toolchains can no longer be installed on 32-bit Windows machines.
The team gives its reasons: 32-bit-only x86 desktop and server CPUs have not been sold for over 15 years, general 32-bit Windows support ended in October 2025, and building the i686 toolchains has caused crashes and out-of-memory failures.
Developers who still produce 32-bit Windows binaries should plan to cross-compile from a supported host such as a 64-bit Windows toolchain before upgrading to 1.100. Other 32-bit platforms are not affected.
