Rust adds a full-time Maintainer in Residence to support the Cargo team
A new funded role aims to ease maintenance load on Cargo, with money from the Rust Foundation fund, the Leadership Council and AWS.
The Rust project has added a full-time Maintainer in Residence for the Cargo team, its build system and package manager. The role is funded through the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund, with extra money from the Rust Leadership Council and AWS.
The Funding team explains that Cargo is involved in many new Rust features and has to work with many tools, which makes upkeep demanding. The team once held a multi-year feature freeze to reduce internal tech debt, and the post says recent departures and reduced funding made it harder to meet baseline maintenance.
The post introduces Scott Schafer, a Cargo team member for three years and lead of the Rust Docker team. He built Cargo workspace inheritance and led the move of compiler diagnostics to the annotate-snippets crate, completed in Rust 1.93.0, which lets the compiler and Cargo share one diagnostics interface.
The position is planned for at least the next 12 months. The Rust team says one maintainer will not remove all of the strain, but expects some relief. Organisations that depend on Cargo can support more hires by donating to the Maintainers Fund.
