Godot 4.8 reaches beta 1 with the feature set frozen and regression fixes the focus

The October 15 snapshot adds no new features over dev 7; the project is asking testers to join bug-hunting sprints.

The Godot team released Godot 4.8 beta 1 on October 15. With this snapshot, 4.8 is in feature freeze, and contributor time has moved to reviewing and fixing regressions instead of adding features.

The announcement says there are no new features compared to the dev 7 snapshot. Instead it rounds up what to expect from 4.8 as a whole, including a native Trail3D node for visual trails and an editor option called Allow Viewport Override, which is enabled by default.

The post also lists breaking changes that developers may need to handle. Examples include scripts no longer being allowed to inherit their own inner classes, a blocking OS.alert() on Android, and an update to mbedTLS 4.1.0.

The project invites testers to take part in bug-hunting sprints and to file reports on GitHub after checking for existing issues. Reports of anything that worked in earlier 4.x releases but fails in the snapshot are described as especially useful.

As a pre-release build, beta 1 is meant for testing projects against the coming version. Teams shipping games should stay on their current stable release and try the beta in a separate copy of the project.
