Godot 4.8 reaches beta 1 with feature freeze and a reworked editor
The open-source engine's first 4.8 beta stops new features and rounds up editor, GDScript and platform changes for developers to test.
The Godot project published Godot 4.8 beta 1 on 15 October 2026. With this snapshot the release is in feature freeze, so contributors are now spending their time on regression fixes and reviews rather than adding new functionality.
The announcement rounds up what to expect in 4.8. Editor changes include the game view being embedded in the main editor window by default, glob-based search in the FileSystem dock and a replace preview in Find in Files. On the engine side it highlights a native Trail3D node for trail effects and a fuzzy search class that can be used from scripts.
A list of breaking changes is included. Examples are stricter GDScript rules that forbid a script from inheriting its own inner classes, joypads on unfocused windows being ignored by default for new projects, and an update of the bundled mbedTLS library to 4.1.0. Starting with this beta, macOS binaries are distributed as separate architectures.
Developers with existing projects can try the beta on a copy of their project, read through the compatibility notes and report any regressions they find to the project. As a pre-release build it is meant for testing rather than production work.
