Godot 4.8 reaches beta 1 and enters feature freeze, with the focus now on regression fixes
The beta snapshot rounds up the 4.8 cycle, lists breaking changes and highlights editor, core and rendering work.
Godot published its 4.8 beta 1 snapshot, which puts the release in full feature freeze. From here, developer effort goes to reviewing and creating fixes for regressions, and the project asks users to join its bug-hunting sprints.
The post does not add new features compared with dev 7. Instead it summarizes the cycle: a new Trail3D node for trail effects, fuzzy searching in the core, cleaner object serialization that avoids oversized version-control diffs, and documentation support for admonitions.
On the editor side, the main screens are now regular docks that can be closed or floated, and the Game, 2D and 3D toolbars have been reworked. The core list also mentions faster removal of many child nodes and faster Object property access.
Developers upgrading should read the breaking changes list in the announcement. It includes updating mbedTLS to 4.1.0, making OS.alert() blocking on Android, and forbidding scripts from inheriting their own inner classes. Test projects on the beta and report regressions.
