Godot 4.8 beta 1 freezes features and rounds up editor, core and rendering changes

The first beta ends feature work for 4.8; the Godot team now asks testers to look for regressions and lists the breaking changes.

Godot 4.8 has reached its first beta snapshot, published on 15 October 2026. The team says the release is now in feature freeze, so developer time is going to regression fixes and reviews rather than new features.

The post is mainly a round-up of what 4.8 brings across the dev snapshots. Highlights include a native Trail3D node for trail effects, fuzzy searching in the core, cleaner object serialization that should keep version control diffs smaller, and a reworked editor in which main screens are regular docks that can be closed or floated.

There is also a list of breaking changes. Examples include forbidding scripts from inheriting their own inner classes, failing when a local debugger is used in release exports, updating mbedTLS to 4.1.0 and ignoring joypads on unfocused windows by default for new projects.

Teams that ship with Godot can try the beta in a separate copy of their project, read the breaking-changes list against their code, and report regressions through the project bug-hunting sprints. Pre-release builds are not meant for shipping games.
